More ailrines in the world, especially the low cost airline, operate more direct flights between 2 destinations. These flights provide shortest travelling time and least hassle, but are generally more expensive in non-low cost carriers, and of lower frequency.

So some people travelling internationally prefer connection flights for lower fare, and greater flexibility on travel dates (when the direct flights are of very low frequency), like taking Middle East carriers on travelling between Europe and Far East and connecting in Middle East. These flights, however, are of longer travelling time and is more complicated.
