AIM-9 HUD symbology question, please?

    AIM-9 HUD symbology question, please?

    *** Posted by Branislav ***
    Dear Sir,

Please be so kind to answer to me one more question about AIM-9 HUD symbology,
    as follows:

After radar lock-on if a selected target is within 12,000 feet (two nm) four reference tics, a range-to-target cue and target aspect triangle are displayed on missile aiming reticle.
The reference tics are positioned at 12,3,6 and 9 o'clock position.

I am interesting about the appearance of range to target cue and missile aiming reticle in HUD when the target is within 12,000 feet.

Related to above mentioned I have two statement of that:

    1. "The range to target cue, consisting of a wide tick mark and a gap in the reticle,
is scaled to 1000 feet per clock position. When the target is within 12,000 feet a range gap, marked by a range tick, opens in the in the circle (the missile aiming reticle becomes range scale) starting at the 12 o'clock position and extends counterclockwise around the circle. This range tick indicates the selected target's range from you in thousand of feet. (The end of the line represents the range to target.)
For example, it the tick and gap are at the 9 o'clock position, the target is 9,000 feet from you.

    2. When the selected target is within 12,000 feet the circular scale (Target Range Circle), as a target range indicator, appears inside of missile aiming reticle. The inside circle represents two miles in range and it "unwinds" anticlockwise as range to target decreases. It is calibrated for release when the range marker passes the 3 o'clock position.

What statement is true? Does the missile aiming reticle become a range scale or there is another circle inside missile aiming reticle as target range indicator/circular scale?

    Any answer will be appreciated.

    Thank You in advance.

    Best regard,

    falconbr
